No Escape

No Escape

2 December 2006

"The sons of this age are wiser in their own generation than are the sons of light." (Luke 16.8)

I recently read the following quote from the Tasmanian author, Richard Flanagan,
"Writing should not offer escape, but it should speak most boldly the truth of its time."

The same week I came upon this pithy phrase, I was looking at some Christian books. One title in particular jumped out and claimed my attention for all the wrong reasons. The book's title was, "How To Look Good, and Feel Great"!

I find it hard to imagine the Apostle Paul being mesmerised by this volume while recovering from a beating or stoning. I simply do not accept that the way Christians look and feel is one of the truths of our time.

It is sad that God needs at this time to speak to us through those who would never loudly claim to be His. Perhaps this is because we who have claimed His salvation have yet to really abandon ourselves to the One whose name comes too often and too effortlessly to our lips?
